St. Peter Parish is happy to welcome Mahshid as our new resident at Mercy House. Mahshid is a refugee from Iran. She left Iran seeking asylum and was sent to Australia by ship. She arrived in Australia 4 days after the border had been closed to immigrants from several countries including hers. She spent the next four years on the tiny island of Nauru, 25 miles south of the equator, in a state of limbo. There was no expectation of relocation or further immigration. For over 2 years she lived in a tent in tropical heat and unsanitary conditions, until she was able to get into temporary housing. Many of the people with her fell into deep depression. One month ago, she was chosen from the 1,200 refugees to be one of 25 to be flown to the United States. She is most grateful to be here in the United States and grateful to all the people of St. Peter Parish who have welcomed her to Mercy House.

Pramela Devi left Sri Lanka in 2012 with her husband. They had been forced out of their country after speaking out against the current regime. They went to Malaysia where her husband found temporary work for two years until he died of a heart condition. Pramela then found herself alone in Malaysia, unable to return to Sri Lanka and unprepared for life alone. She found work in a factory while waiting for acceptance from a country. She came to the United States in December unprepared for cold weather. She is very grateful for the hospitality of St. Peter Parish.
